There is a lot of scientific evidence showing that some people are more prone to having addictive personalities. This can be anything from drugs, to cigarettes to alcohol, anything they believe makes them feel good and then they find it hard to stop. There is a lot of arguments on why this is different between people, and within a person (maybe DNA, personality, etc) what makes them more likely to become addictive. No one knows for sure yet.

Some drugs are physically addictive to everyone such as heroine. This means that the chemicals it releases in the body cause physical side effects, and therefore when they stop taking it they can have very severe withdrawal symptoms making it even harder to stop.
